Toyota Prius Is Different

Posted in: Car Loans | | No Comments »>

Last week I was returning from a business trip and my flight was delayed and I missed my connecting flight home.  Not to be stuck in an airport for the night, I decided to pick up a rental car and drive the two hours home.

After calling the car rental to make my reservation, I was assured that they would have a car for the return trip home. So, after a long walk through the terminals and a bus trip out to the car rental lot, I looked at the reservation board to not see my name listed.  Walking up to the counter, the service lady assured me that all was well and they just needed some more information.

With that business completed, she asked if a Toyota Prius would be OK.  I was only interested in any vehicle with four wheels and an engine and a way home and said YES!  After all I have owned and still own a Toyota and must say they have been an excellent car.

Well that was to become the beginning of another journey.

Getting into the car I noticed that there was no key to be found.  I looked on the steering column (the normal place to put it now days) and I looked at the dash (this used to be the preferred key location).  What I did find was a key fob hanging from the dash.  Grasping the fob I gave it the twist to start the car, but alas that only turned the fob and did nothing for the thing embedded in the dash.  I instinctively pulled on the fob, with out any result, and thought to give it a push in.  With that new action, the fob and the attached small rectangular box was deposited into my waiting hand.  Now I had a dilemma, what to do with this thing, and is this the same as a key?

Not knowing what else to do I put it back into the dash opening with a bit of a push and it latched in by some mysterious action.  Now this may not be a difficult thing to deal with for a normal person at a normal time of day . . . but I’ve been up since early morning attended a full day long stressful meeting and traveled from Manhattan in New York City to the airport via the subway, sky train, and walked a country mile or more at JFK to only find that what was supposed my gate in terminal 3 was actually a gate to board a bus to take us to terminal 4!  Then once in terminal 4 finding my gate became a mystery to me (I had to do the unmanly thing and ask an airport service attendant where the gate was).  Only to find that it was positioned behind airport security screening area (the terminal was built before 9-11 and was not designed with this in mind) so as it looked like one would have to pass through the security area to reach the gate, but there was a small path to the side with a small sign to show the way.  Finally arriving at my gate area to only wait an extra 40 minutes at the gate to board the plane (I thoughtfully purchased a sandwich, chips and a bottle of water while waiting, good thing I would have a lot of time to eat it), and then wait at the gate another 40 minutes for connecting passengers to board that were delayed in their connecting flight, and then to top it all off we pulled back from the gate and sat on the tarmac for another 40 minutes (now was a good time to eat my sandwich) for I have no idea why.  All this time I was thinking that if I make my connecting flight (my flight deplaned at the last position possible in Terminal A and my connecting flight was in Terminal C in almost the furthest away location possible.  Hence a long walk, an intra-terminal commuter train ride and multiple people movers and escalators away, it will be a miracle if I made my connection (with all that behind me arriving at the gate the plane was gone.  The airline did reschedule me for the next available flight (ended up being the next day in the afternoon!)).  But still had the calm assurance that if all else fails and I can rent a car and drive home.  And this brings me to 11:30 pm sitting in the Prius, and I am TIRED.

Back to try to get the Prius moving, I did remember a couple of TV commercials (I must admit that at least for once a commercial added some value to my life) that had a button positioned on the dash for starting the car.  Placing my hand on the dash I felt a depression and gave it push and amazingly the dash board came to life.  I looked for the gear shift and saw none where I would have expected it to be.  Not on the floor board between the seats, not on the steering column (they used to be there a decade ago), and then I saw a knob on the dash by the key fob/rectangular box thingy).  And had a major reflection to the vast past, back to 1963.  The Pontiac Tempest had their automatic shift knob on the dash in the same location (now that is progress).  I placed my fingers around the knob and followed the diagram for shifting and it would not move!  I then did what any normal person would do and reached up to the top of the dash and pushed the button again (if one worked well, maybe once again would be better).  And alas all the lights when out on the dash-now I was really not having a good time.  Putting the tired and old trouble shooting mind set to work and not to be dismayed (it did not even come to my thoughts to go back inside the rental office and ask for help, but remember I used my ask for help card (you only get one per day) back at JFK!) and began every type of activity I could think of to get the car to work.  Then I had a brain flash, what about consulting the owners manual (this is almost a unmanly thing, but I was becoming desperate).  Opening the glove box and feeling inside I found nothing, the manual was gone.  So much for that!  After many “activities” I did successfully get the shifter to move to drive and still did not hear an engine come to life.  Which then led to more trying in what resulted in pushing on the accelerator and to my amazement the car lurched forward!  I was going home after all and there would be no way I was going turn the car off (however one would do that) after all it took to get the car moving in the first place.

Cars Stolen Every 3 Seconds, Dont Let The Next One Be Yours

Posted in: Car Loans | | No Comments »>

There is one vehicle stolen for every 3 second worldwide. that fact is scary for all of us who own a car. Avoidance is better than cure; this should be your motto if you don’t want to be the next casualty of car theft that is active all over the world.

If the motor vehicle departments of many countries are to be believed, millions of cars are going to be stolen this year. But you are not going to be one of those unfortunate car owners if you keep in mind the following tips. Never forget these words keep under lock and key. Over fifty percent of the car thefts happen because of driver’s forgetfulness; either he leaves the car running, or he forgets the key in the ignition or sometimes forgets to lock the garage door or the door of the car itself. Roll up your windows and take the key and lock the door before leaving the car unattended. Another useful tip is parking safety. Attended car parks are safer than the unattended ones. Make sure the car park has good lighting.

The wheels should be turned toward the side in driveways in the parking position so that it can’t be easily towed away. If you are leaving the car for an extended period of time, disable it by removing the electronic ignition fuse, coil wire, rotor distributor.

Remember not to make it easy for the theif. The registration documents should not be left in the car. If you do this, life will be easier for the theif to sell your car using these documents. Preserve the title in a safe place at home. A car is probably our second biggest investment after our home, so please do not afraid to spend in antitheft devices. To top your antitheft measure, invest in a range of antitheft devices for ultimate protection. The common antitheft devices include;steering wheel locks and immobilizers,fuel-kill switches, ignition-kill switches, car alarms. Different car security systems provide you with an anti theft solutions but if your car is stolen anyway, then the tracking device takes over and helps the police track and recover your car. Thus it provides the ultimate part of your anti-theft measures. Just like your monetary obligation doesn’t end with buying the mobile handset, in the same way buying the tracking product is only the first step. A monthly service fee is usual to keep the tracking service. A GPS tracking system, may cost a little more but the investment is worth it. With a GPS (Global Positioning System) car tracking system, a car can be tracked at all times. Some of the systems come with the feature of verbal communication with the operator at the central station. This feature comes to great help particularly in the instances of car jacking getting more common by the day.

The higher end car tracking services act on a proactive basis if the operators find the vehicle running at an odd hour through an odd place, they will contact the owner by phone to confirm that the owner of the vehicle is aware of its whereabouts. The police are informed immediately otherwise. With a rather high product price and monthly rental service charges, car trackers are no doubt expensive. But remember, they are among the most effective security systems available today. Dont swap money for security. As your insurance company may well offer up to 10% off the premium if they know your vehicle has a tracking device. Get all the devices are installed properly; as it may affect the car’s electrical system. It will be essential to seek the help of a professional in this case.

Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked. Also check with vehicle theft tracking/security system to know whether your model belongs to the frequently stolen car model list. Get the VIN number etched on the windows

Lastly, don’t get upset if the worst happens despite all your precautions: Inform the police as fast as possible including the location and time of the theft.

I drive a used Peugeot 406 which has a gps tracking system, alarm, imobileizer and is kept in a garage at night. This car cost me one and a half years salary so you can never be too careful.

Do Drivers Improve Driving Habit When Gas Prices Go Up?

Posted in: Car Loans | | No Comments »>

Automobile mileage matters in particular the moment you’ve become worried about the rising fuel costs. Using a auto together with a good mileage for each gallon of gasoline that you use would probably allow you to save up tremendously. Better mileage is not just reserved for newer and better vehicles. Believe it or not good mileage can also be enjoyed even by older cars. Mileage of your auto actually will depend on numerous factors.

One of the primary factors that have an effect on a vehicle’s mileage is actually how you drive. Driving manners and habits have got a great deal to do with car mileage. For instance, a driver prone to rapid accelerations and heavy braking will use up quite an amount of gasoline per distance traveled. This is due to quick accelerations and immediate braking may use up a lot more gasoline since it sets the vehicle into sudden strains. The reality is, aggressive driving can certainly impact on fuel economy by as much as 30 % in highways and also about 5 % in town as well as city inroads.

High-speed driving might also have an effect on a car’s mileage. Driving fast usually increases a car’s aerodynamic drag. Which means the faster that a car travels, the greater the wind resistance becoming a factor in fuel economy. Habitual idling also affects a car’s mileage. Regular idling uses gasoline but adds 0 miles on the counter and therefore affects the vehicle’s mileage.

A different factor that will affect a car’s mileage is the entire condition of the car itself. A year old car not properly maintained can use up and waste far more gasoline than a two or three year old car which has followed the proper maintenance schedule. Car owners should realize that a inadequately tuned and maintained car motor can burn more fuel.

Car maintenance is not only limited to the engine if improving car mileage is the goal. Even tire inflation will account for a car’s mileage. Correctly inflated tires may help lower rolling resistance and thus help a car enjoy much better mileage. Some other important elements of the car to take a look into to improve car mileage are the air filter and also brakes. Unclean air filters and poor brakes might make the motor work double hard and also use up more gasoline.

The type of gasoline being used in a vehicle also affects it’s mileage. There are certain versions of gasoline fuels that offer lesser energy than others. Utilizing reformulated gasoline, for instance, may cause several changes in fuel economy because of their lesser energy content. Not only is the type affecting the gasoline’s energy content, seasons might also have some effect. The reason behind this could be behind the refining process. But generally, gasoline products sold in the summer usually have a higher energy content rating than gasoline products being sold throughout the winter season.

With gasoline becoming pretty an expensive product, automobile owners need to improve their automobile’s fuel economy and mileage as much as it can be. Greater mileage and fuel use shows that automobile has to utilize lesser fuel in traveling a certain distance. This can lead to lesser fuel being utilized. The less fuel used the less amount of gasoline needed. And with gasoline costs rising these recent months, it could possibly account into substantial savings which will ease the worries caused by the higher gasoline price tag.

Electric Car Conversion – Could Save The Planet

Times are tough moneywise globally at the moment.Motorfuel prices seem to just spiral skywards.Demand from rising economies inAsia is pushing up oil demandOil companies are raking in the shekels.

Cars are one of the biggest polluters on the planet because of the carbon dioxide they pump out every day. In 1997 there were over 600 million motor vehicles in the world and by 2030 it’s likely to be 1,200,000,000. That’s a lot of global warming.

Motor manufacturers see the elrctric car as their savior.Zero emission cars!

Driving electric means no fuel bills, no money going into oil company coffers. It means less dependence on oil producing countries, more political freedom. It could mean less war because of fuel.

When car manufacturers this year released their first new electric cars many were glad they had already converted. One small electric car released by Mitsubishi in Australia costs a whopping $70,000.

If, like many bright sparks, you have an electric car then you are one of an increasing number of drivers trying to stop the poisoning of this planet. While that’s an admirable aim it’s not the sole reason people choose to have electric cars.

People have been converting their own cars to electric for some years now.

This was good news for the world DIY car market where a total conversion costs a mere $300 and that includes the manual telling you how to do it.This massive saving in cost is great reason for going green.Save the planet and save your greenbacks.Meanwhile BP is destroying the gulf of Mexico region..So BP can kiss my ass cos I don’t need gas.

Those highly priced new cars seem to defeat the idea of saving money on fuel costs. It makes more sense to just convert your own car and plug it in to the electric at home each night.

Having an electric motor vehicle means you soon get your money back. It only costs about $1 to charge your car from your electric plug at home. You can travel up to 100 miles at the moment..on a simple charge. And dont think electric cars are slow. You will get up to 55mph (88.5 kph). Plenty of electric cars have already been booked for speeding..

The DIY conversions are quick to do and require no special mechanical knowledge. All you need is the manual. Conversions can be done on any type of vehicle in any country.

My observations show one company in particular is a good bet for getting the manual and supporting advice. Not surprisingly the chap who wrote the manual and created the DIY electric conversion kit is a keen environmentalist. He and all his family have long ago converted their cars to electric and see electric motor vehicles as a great help for improving the environment. Google electric car kits info to get off the gas highway..

Re Launched, Was It That Bad First Time Round

Posted in: Car Loans | | No Comments »>

The mid-sized hatch first had a crack in the mid-1990s, presenting a stylish but bland-to-drive offering that soon disappeared in a fog of buyer disinterest.

Blandness is not a death sentence for every car’s sales future, but for a French brand that is expected to show something at least a little wacky, a lack of character is not tolerated for long. As for the original Laguna, not even the Renault faithful were interested. It, along with Renault’s Aisian presence, disappeared for a few years.

When the reinvigorated Company had another go at relaunching the Renault Laguna back in 2002, we all waited to see what the market would make of it, and what sort of car it was.

Unfortunately, it didn’t matter. The marketplace again voted with its feet, walking straight past Renault showrooms.

But what the actual car was like was a happier story.

The Laguna was available as both a hatchback and station wagon, but initially only in Authentic mid-spec and Privilege upper-spec trim levels, and only with the 3.0-liter V6 engine.

In the past, we’ve often plumped for the four-cylinder versions of European cars on the basis that they’re usually the home-market version and all the better for it. But this time, the V6 proved itself to be worth the extra money if only for its refinement and relaxed drive.

Nothing really was wrong with the 2.0-liter engine, and it did offer a manual gearbox (which the V6 didn’t). But purchasers in that section of the market wanted automatic transmissions, and the four-cylinder car dropped the ball by using a four-speed auto compared with the V6′s five-speed unit.

So the V6 was the one to have, but it wasn’t perfect.

The four-speed engine was smooth and refined, but it didn’t really offer a sporty level of acceleration. But that was the least of it.

The main problem was the gearbox, a fully electronic unit with fly-by-wire technology.

It was mixed up easily.

And even when it was left to its own devices, it could sometimes throw a jagged, clunky shift into the mix for no apparent reason.

The rest of the driving experience was hardly typical of a European medium-sized, front-wheel-drive car.

Cornering was relatively flat and the ride trod the middle ground between plush and controlled, but at the same time the Laguna managed some of that long-lost French magic-carpet quality.

The beauty of it all was the way it came together. It also confirmed the old view that Europe really does have some of the best suspension engineers around.

But the object that really should have carried the Laguna a bit further up buyers shortlists was its excellent safety rating.

Indentantly tested, it was the world’s first car to achieve five stars out of five for occupant safety.

That five-star rating is probably the Laguna’s biggest-selling point as a second-hand car, even today. Need to know:

Driving Experience In Athens And Other Cities In Greece

Posted in: Car Loans | | No Comments »>

I recently visited a country which holds the record of longest coastline. Greece is surrounded by Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea and Mediterranean Sea. No doubt it is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. The weather is beautiful, people are beautiful it is just amazing. Though there is one downfall which is the driving in the capital city. We hired three used cars for 6 days and we felt like we driving in India, Nepal or China.

The traffic is terrible. The cars are pushing for spaces, some even drive through the tram lines. The worst are the road signs. The road signs are in Greek and if you don’t know how to read and speak Greek then you struggle to find your way round Athens or even the whole of Greece to be honest. The only things in English are the billboards advertising for erotic clubs and online casinos, what good is that for us?.

But if you go outside Athens driving is awesome. We drove to Delphi (a beautiful city located in the heart of the mountain 3 hours away from Athens) was certainly the highlight of the trip. The road to Delphi is through the mountain from which you will be able to see amazing landscapes of Greece. It can be dangerous if you are a careless driver so I would suggest you to keep your eyes on the road. While driving I had a deja vu of Nepal, driving through those beautiful Himalayas. My best driving experience compare to my friends was certainly driving in the island of Poros and Aegina. There are few temples and beautiful historical sculptures to see in this island so hiring a car is definitely a good thing.

Driving is certainly a nightmare in Athens but outside the city its a treat. You will just need time to get used to Athen’s traffic and road signals. We went in the month of May and it gets hot then so it was a good idea to hire cars other than take public transport.

We hired used Audi A4 Saloon for our trip to Delphi and I thought I will write something about this car. I like to write car reviews on cars which I have used on my holidays to let help you people decide which car is the best to drive in which country. I never had no problem with the Audi and I definitely recommend you to hire this car when you visit Greece.
